1. When was your winery founded?

“Our vineyard was established in 1909 by Matteo and Serafina Battuello, who acquired the land upon immigrating from Northern Italy. Since then, we have been dedicated to grape cultivation, maintaining a proud tradition that spans over a century.”

2. Why did you choose to be in the St. Helena American Viticultural Area (AVA)?

“That’s where our estate is.”

3. Who is owner? Who is winemaker? Who is vineyard manager?

“The ranch remains proudly family-owned and -operated, with Craig, the great-grandson of Matteo and Serafina, along with David, the great-great-grandson, at the helm. Our experienced winemaker, Michael Trujillo, brings over four decades of expertise to our winemaking endeavors.”

4. How many acres do you farm in the St. Helena AVA?

“Our ranch is 82 acres. We are mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon but also have Sauvignon Blanc, Valdiguié (used to be called Napa Gamay), Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.”

5. Do you farm sustainably/organically/biodynamically?

“We prioritize sustainable farming practices on our farm. We firmly believe that taking care of the land is essential, as it reciprocates by ensuring our success. With over 114 years of farming experience, we understand that true longevity in farming comes from sustainability. Additionally, we are proud to be certified as fish-friendly, further demonstrating our dedication to environmentally conscious agriculture.”

6. Please describe your vineyards: soil; exposure; narrow spacing; type of trellising; irrigation/dry farmed, etc.

“Our vineyards boast a diverse range of soil types, contributing to the richness and complexity of our wines. With over 20 meticulously curated blocks, we’ve tailored our approach to micro-farming, ensuring that each section is optimized to support both the vines and the soil in the most effective manner. Our attention to detail extends to factors like exposure, row spacing, and trellising techniques, all of which play a vital role in the cultivation process. Additionally, we take a balanced approach to irrigation, mindful of the importance of sustainable practices.”

7. What might surprise people to learn about you/your winery/your operation?

“What often surprises people about our winery is that it remains a genuine family-run venture. When you visit, you’re likely to encounter members of our family actively tending to the land, adding a personal touch to the experience that sets us apart.”

8. What is special about the St. Helena AVA in your opinion? Is it misunderstood? What do you wish visitors knew about it which perhaps they don’t?

“The St. Helena AVA in Napa Valley stands out for its diverse microclimates, well-draining soils, and a long growing season, which result in wines of exceptional balance and complexity. Its historical significance, diversity of grape varieties, and adorable downtown contribute to its unique charm, while a strong sense of community and tradition further enhance the region’s appeal to wine enthusiasts.”

9. What’s your favorite place in St. Helena to eat, drink or relax?
